Overview

The Kenyan coast, particularly Mombasa, offers a unique cultural experience distinct from the rest of Kenya, influenced by a rich history involving Portuguese explorers, Arab traders, and British colonizers. The coastal culture has remained largely unchanged since the late 15th century, with notable Arab influences evident in the local language, Kiswahili.

Navigating the Coastline

Mombasa is situated on an island, leading to limited road expansion and a slower pace of life. The city is connected to the mainland and the north coast via bridges, with popular areas like Nyali, Shanzu and Mtwapa creek featuring numerous tourist amenities. Traffic can be unpredictable, making travel times vary significantly.

Road Conditions and Travel Options

Traveling by road can be challenging due to rough conditions and heavy traffic, particularly from Nairobi. The introduction of the modern standard gauge railway (Madaraka Express) has improved travel times significantly, reducing the journey from Nairobi to Mombasa to about four and a half hours. For those with more resources, flying to Moi International Airport is also an option, though traffic in Mombasa can still pose challenges.

The Madaraka Express Passenger Service serves 13 destinations between Mombasa and Suswa stations

South Coast Attractions

To the south of Mombasa, the Likoni Ferry connects to the south coast, known for its beautiful beaches, including the famous Diani Beach. The ferry service, while scenic, can be slow and congested, especially during peak hours.
