Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faced a hostile environment during a thanksgiving service in Nyandarua County on December 28, 2024. The event, held for Shamata Ward MCA Gitau Njamba, turned chaotic when Nyandarua Senator John Methu’s speech was disrupted by a fracas.
The event took a wrong turn when Senator Methu’s speech was interrupted by a fracas. Images and videos showed an irate crowd challenging the police, who responded by firing teargas to disperse the crowd.
The bishop present at the event was seen trying to calm the crowd, which was adamant that the police needed to leave.
After the chaos, Gachagua spoke, insisting that he would continue to fight for Kenyans’ rights despite apparent persecution from the government. He accused a local Member of Parliament of being the mastermind behind the attempt to disrupt the prayer event.
Gachagua also faulted the authorities at the event, accusing them of fueling the chaos by firing a teargas canister. He questioned how a civilian could have obtained a teargas canister and used it at the event.

In the lead-up to the commotion, Senator Methu hinted that there were forces intent on ensuring the event did not take place because Gachagua would be in attendance.
Methu emphasized that despite any actions taken by the President, they would continue to pray.
Gachagua has been vocal against the Kenya Kwanza Government since his impeachment in October. This incident adds to the ongoing tension and political unrest in the region. The disruption of the event and the subsequent accusations highlight the volatile political climate and the challenges faced by opposition leaders in Kenya.
